Acquired from Coats Viyella in April 1999 for €515 million, Dynacast specialises in the design and manufacture of complex zinc, aluminium and magnesium diecast components for a broad range of customers.
At acquisition, the business operated from 37 plants in 19 countries and comprised two divisions: precision metal diecasting and thermoplastic injection moulding.
Separating the two divisions, which had limited synergies, created a strategic opportunity to divest non-core thermoplastic operations and focus on core metal diecasting operations.
Following the resolution of management and operational issues, the thermoplastic injection moulding operations were divested in September 2000 for substantially more than their value at the time of the buyout.
The strategy for the remaining core metal diecasting business was to develop international operations through organic expansion and acquisitive growth.
Dynacast was sold to Melrose Plc in 2005.
