Avio’s Vega space rocket will launch a block of Skybox Imaging satellites

The Vega space rocket will launch a block of high resolution imaging satellites for Skybox Imaging from the Guyana Space Center in 2016. The contract was signed by Arianespace.

Vega is the European launcher designed, developed and manufactured in Italy by Avio, based at Colleferro near Rome - through its subsidiary ELV (30% owned by ASI).

Pier Giuliano Lasagni, CEO of Avio, said: "This contract is a further confirmation of the competitiveness of the Vega launcher and of the know-how of Avio as a system integrator. We are proud of the role of Italy's space industry in the international satellite market and are looking for this mission with the first US customer for Vega."

Vega is the latest generation launcher designed to transfer small satellites in low orbit (around 700 km from the earth) for institutional and scientific use for earth observation and environmental monitoring. Sixty-five percent of launcher is manufactured in the Avio plant at Colleferro, near Rome. In the current configuration, Vega is capable to place in orbit satellites up to 1,500 Kg and it completes the European launchers family.
