PiC appoints Sir Ian Carruthers OBE as Non-Executive Director

Partnerships in Care is pleased to announce the appointment of Sir Ian Carruthers OBE as Non-Executive Director.

In his 43 year NHS career, Sir Ian has transformed access to healthcare as well as the quality of services and financial performance in both national and local settings. He has overseen many major service changes and is a champion of change to deliver better outcomes for patients, staff and communities.

Sir Ian Carruthers received his Knighthood in the 2003 New Year’s Honours List, for services to the NHS.  In March 2006, Sir Ian became Interim Chief Executive of the NHS and was responsible for running one of the largest organisations in the world, having 1.3 million employees and a budget in excess of £100 billion.

Most recently Sir Ian was the Chief Executive of the NHS South of England comprising South Central, South East Coast and South West Strategic Health Authorities. He believes strongly in partnership working and this is demonstrated through the improvements that have been seen in this region.

On his appointment, Sir Ian Carruthers OBE, said:

Sir Ian has undertaken a review of innovation in healthcare on behalf of the Chief Executive of the NHS in England culminating in the Innovation Health and Wealth Report which forms part of the Government strategy for improving the spread of best practice in healthcare as well as economic growth in the UK. Sir Ian has also undertaken reviews on procurement and reconfiguration in the NHS.  He has been the lead author on several papers reviewing and improving the NHS and is seen as an international expert on healthcare systems and service delivery.

Sir Ian is currently Chancellor of the University of the West of England, Chair of the Healthcare UK Governance Board, Chair of the Innovation of Health and Wealth Implementation Board, Co-Chair of the Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia and a Non-Executive Director of Bioquell plc. Sir Ian is currently developing a portfolio of interests relating to healthcare and the public sector.

Sir Ian will attend the Board’s monthly meetings and also chair PiC’s Quality and Risk Committee.
