Cinven appoints Dr. Arno Mahlert as Supervisory Board Chairman at Springer Science & Business Media
Candover and Cinven, leading European buyout specialists, today announce the appointment of Dr. Arno Mahlert (56) as Supervisory Board Chairman of the newly formed specialist publishing group, Springer. His appointment takes effect from 16 September 2003, the expected completion date of the BertelsmannSpringer acquisition.
Springer will become a global leader in STM publishing, following Cinven and Candover’s acquisition of BertelsmannSpringer and merger with Kluwer Academic Publishers.
After ten years' service at Bertelsmann AG, Dr. Mahlert moved on to become commercial manager at publishing group Holtzbrinck GmbH in 1988. From 1992, he was also engaged with the management of its German-speaking school and educational media publishing units. At the beginning of 2003, Dr. Mahlert was appointed to the Holtzbrinck Supervisory Board. To avoid any potential conflict of interests, he will surrender this position but continue with other duties for the publishing group and the Holtzbrinck family.
Jens Tonn, Director of Candover, and Peter Gangsted, Chairman of the Cinven Germany management board commented:
"We are very pleased to be able to welcome Arno Mahlert to the Supervisory Board. He has acquired a broad expertise at renowned German media companies with a marked international bias, which we are confident will allow him to make a significant contribution to the business alongside CEO-designate Derk Haank."
